New York State
Summer officially begins June 21, as most of us already know.
We are probably all looking forward to the lazy days of summer. I know I will enjoy reading some great books, hanging out with family and friends and going on day trips and longer adventures.
It has been an interesting year for our Alpha Eta Chapter of DKG.
Personally, I want to thank the Executive Board for all their work planning and executing worthwhile programs this past year and for the upcoming year. Thank you also to Barbara Cross for her continued work as Chair of the Grant-In-Aid Committee. Barbara notified the Rockland County High Schools and received applications and essays from students interested in the Grant-In-Aid. Barbara and her committee, Carol Boyatsis, Lochie Musso and myself, read the essays and Hana Namkung, a student from Tappan Zee High School, was chosen as the recipient of the Grant-in-Aid.
The 2019 International Conference/Global Awareness will take place July 30 - August 1 in Mashantucket, CT. Lochie and I will both be attending this conference. There is still time to register if anyone else is interested in attending.
I will be contacting you all soon about a summer get together at my house in Nyack this August. Until then, stay cool!!
Treasurer Jerry Goumas reminds us that the new schedule for dues collection is NOW! The International changed the fiscal year last summer at the Austin Convention. This change in the Standing Rules will facilitate budget planning for 2019-2020.
The dues are still $75 and you can mail your check made out to Alpha Eta to Geraldine Goumas at 120 Locust Drive, Upper Nyack, NY 10960. Paying now will save Jerry a lot of phone calls!
Distinguished Woman of the Year
Congratulations to Carol Boyatsis, named a DKG New York State Distinguished Woman of the Year at the Conference in Geneva last April. Carol has been a DKG, Alpha Eta member since 1986.
She has held the offices of Secretary, First and Second Vice-President as well as chairing and serving on numerous committees.
Carol has graciously hosted many meetings at her home, especially the holiday event and arranged to hold meetings at her church in Pearl River. A dedicated DKG member, Carol has sponsored many new members. She is truly more than worthy of this honor and we are proud to call her sister!
International Conference in Northeast: July 30-August 1, 2019
Themed Conferences are the focus of International DKG events this summer. Global Awareness will be the emphasis in Connecticut. Guest speakers, breakout sessions, great entertainment, colleagues from all over the northeast and more are awaiting! It is not too late to register for the discounted registration and room block.
Be sure to go to the DKG.org website for details and pack your bags!
May 8, 2019 – Grant-in-Aid
Barbara Cross, chair of the Scholarship Committee, presented a check for $1,000 to Hana Namkung of South Orangetown, Tappan Zee High School. Hana’s essay started out by saying, “I never considered being a teacher,” but she convinced the readers that this is her true career choice. An outstanding student, Hana is an active community member as well. You can read her essay on the website.
The Grant-in-Aid winner, Hana Namkung, is second from the left standing. Both she and her mother were dinner guests at our meeting in Joe & Joe’s Restaurant, Nyack.

New Chapter Project
Thanks to Lisa Gould’s suggestion, Alpha Eta is endeavoring to provide books for elementary students. These books are intended to be a special gift for a child identified by his or her teacher. We are collecting new (and nearly new in perfect condition!) books.
Each book will have a book-plate acknowledging that it is a gift from Alpha Eta chapter of DKG Society International.
